Medicare Chiropractic Insurance Coverage
Medicare is a national health insurance program in the United States established on July 30, 1965, and signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It provides healthcare coverage for people 65 and older and some individuals with disabilities.
Medicare covers treatments that meet ALL of the following criteria:
- The patient must have a primary diagnosis of subluxation and a secondary diagnosis reflecting a neuromusculoskeletal condition.
- The patient must require chiropractic treatment using manual manipulation.
- The manipulation must have a direct therapeutic relationship to the patient’s condition.
- There must be a reasonable expectation of recovery or improvement of function resulting from the chiropractic treatment.
- Medicare chiropractor coverage only pays for the active, corrective treatment of acute or chronic subluxation.
Insurance Coverage Limitations
No other diagnostic or therapeutic services ordered or provided by a chiropractor are covered. This includes X-rays or other diagnostic tests.
Additionally, when ongoing chiropractic care stops leading to improvement, it is considered maintenance therapy and is not covered by Medicare health insurance for chiropractic care.
